Redefining Basement Renovation

+ More info

Description

When one thinks of a basement renovation, usually one thinks of a project that is inside the box. This project and client are very outside of the box and outside of the norm.

Located at the lower level of a large custom builder home in the Palisades, our client's primary goal was to create a multi-purpose space for entertainment for the whole family and entertaining friends. While most home theatres have theatre-style seating, we did not want to limit the use of the space so we designed the theatre with a sectional couch, a built-in banquette, and a full bar.

Our first problem was that the poorly built home was taking major water in the rain, so we dug out and waterproofed the entire structure.

Once this was complete, we designed a custom mahogany paneling, a disappearing door that when closed, you literally can't find the way out. Speakers are hidden behind custom wall panels. All surfaces are isolated from the structure to reduce vibration. Finally, the door has an electronically activated perimeter seal to completely seal the room off from the rest of the house.

All millwork was built by RKI Millwork who worked closely with us to iron out every detail.

The project also included a new elevator, a mudroom, a custom wood shop, and the renovation of the existing bedroom and bathroom.

We are currently starting a large addition and full dig out of the backyard for the same client.
