Ballard + Mensua Architecture was featured in Washingtonian magazine’s article, “6 Dreamy Outdoor Dining Space Ideas That Will Elevate Your Home,” highlighting one of the firm’s custom outdoor living projects.

The featured project centered on a six-bedroom farmhouse where the homeowners envisioned a complete outdoor lifestyle experience. In addition to a screened porch, pool, cabana, guesthouse, and expansive garage, the design called for a pavilion that would accommodate outdoor dining, a kitchen, a fireplace, and a comfortable TV-viewing area.

To create a sense of enclosure within an open farm landscape, Ballard + Mensua designed a stone and western red cedar pavilion carefully integrated into the site. By nesting the structure into a hillside and using surrounding buildings to frame the space, the design creates intimacy while preserving expansive views.

In the article, principal architect Seth Ballard shared insights on designing outdoor spaces that feel like a vacation destination at home. He emphasized the importance of combining perspective, hardscape, landscape, lighting, shade structures, and water features to create memorable outdoor environments. He also discussed practical ways to extend seasonal use through outdoor heaters, retractable roof systems, pergolas, and pavilions.

The feature reflects Ballard + Mensua’s ongoing commitment to designing outdoor living spaces that seamlessly connect architecture, landscape, and lifestyle.
