Ballard + Mensua Architecture was awarded Residential Project of the Year by Home & Design in 2017 for their transformation of a 1913 Cleveland Park residence in Washington, DC.
Commissioned by realtor Hans Wydler and his wife Ginny, the project seamlessly blended historic character with contemporary design. The renovation more than doubled the home’s square footage while maintaining its original charm. To achieve this balance, the team sourced antique oak beams, installed Belgian oak floors, and designed custom iron railings. The exterior brick was painted to harmonize the new additions with the existing architecture.
The completed home features formal living and dining rooms, an eat-in kitchen, a sunroom, five bedrooms, and a recreation room—combining elegant historic details with modern amenities.
This project reflects Ballard + Mensua’s signature approach to residential design: honoring the past while creating spaces that support contemporary living.
