Ballard + Mensua Architecture’s creative approach to adaptive reuse was featured in Apartment Therapy in the article “How to Turn Your Garage Into a Home Office.” Originally highlighted by Washingtonian, the project gained renewed attention during the COVID-19 pandemic as more homeowners looked for ways to reimagine underused spaces.

The project transformed a detached garage into a light-filled studio combining functionality with thoughtful design details. Principal architect Seth Ballard replaced the old garage doors with carriage house–style French doors to bring in natural light. A new Spanish tile roof, reclaimed ceiling beams, distressed porcelain tile flooring, and custom built-ins created a warm, inviting environment.

The redesign also included a new bathroom and upgraded lighting, making the space equally suited for working from home, hosting guests, or simply relaxing. The feature underscores Ballard + Mensua’s commitment to blending historic character, sustainable materials, and modern needs in every project.
